How to market a new sports league in India: a season playbook
What to do off-season, pre-season, on match days, in the playoffs and after the final, from the team that launched a league from zero.

A new league has no fans, no habit and no history. Marketing it is a sequence: give people something to recognise, give them reasons to look every week, and give sponsors proof. This playbook follows a season in five phases. It comes from our work launching the Korfball Premier League, India's first mixed-gender korfball league, and from match-day work for cricket and kabaddi teams.
Phase 0: a name and a look people can rally behind
Before any post goes out, the league needs a name, a logo and a visual language that work on a jersey, a phone screen and a gate banner. Pick colours and a tone of voice early and write them down. Everything later (posters, reels, the website) borrows from this. For the Korfball Premier League we named the league, built the identity and the website, then planned the reveal.
Off-season: keep fans warm, get sponsors signed
- Brand refresh and identity, if needed.
- Sponsorship decks that show where a sponsor will appear.
- A content plan for the whole season, so match days are never improvised.
- Player and athlete branding.
Pre-season: build hype and sell tickets
Do not reveal everything at once. Reveal in stages, so each reveal is its own moment. For a league that can be teams, cities, jerseys or fixtures. Our korfball launch used countdowns, a “guess the cities” post, a jersey reveal and a “mark your calendars” checklist, each a small reason to come back.
- Squad and jersey reveals.
- A launch film and teaser reels.
- Ticketing campaigns.
- Creator and influencer pushes.
Match days: real-time content, every match
This is where agencies are tested. Plan templates before the season (score card, player of the match, milestone, line-up) so posts go out within minutes of the moment. Add reels from the stands, player features and on-ground gate and arena branding. Our match-day work for Delhi Capitals and the kabaddi teams in the Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League follows this pattern.
Playoffs: turn a season into a story
- Fan engagement campaigns and contests.
- Hype films.
- Sponsor activations.
- Watch-party and event media.
Post-season: prove the value, set up next year
Publish a season recap film, send each sponsor a report on where and how often they were seen, and keep the fan community talking with behind-the-scenes content. Then start planning next season while the numbers are fresh.
The mistakes we see most
- Launching with no identity, then changing it mid-season.
- Posting only on match days and going silent in between.
- Adding sponsor logos at the end instead of building them into content.
- Measuring followers only, and not what fans did.
