Framer vs WordPress vs Shopify: which website is right for you?

Three tools, three jobs. How to choose between Framer, WordPress and Shopify for your website without regretting it in a year.

Framer, WordPress and Shopify are not three versions of the same thing. Each is built for a different job. Choosing well starts with what your website must do, not with which tool is trending.

The short answer

  • Shopify: if you sell products online and want checkout, payments, inventory and shipping handled.
  • Framer: if you want a fast, beautiful marketing site, a portfolio or a landing page that your team can edit easily.
  • WordPress: if you need a content-heavy site, a large blog, custom features or plugins, and you want to own and host it.

Shopify: built to sell

Shopify is an online store platform. Product pages, cart, payments, discounts, inventory and order management come with it. It suits D2C brands and shops. It is less natural for a content-heavy site, though you can add a blog and pages.

Framer: built to look sharp

Framer is a design-first website builder. It produces fast, polished sites with smooth animation and a visual editor, which makes it a good fit for agencies, startups, portfolios and landing pages. It is not a store platform, and very large, complex sites may suit other tools better.

WordPress: built to be flexible

WordPress is the most flexible of the three, with a huge range of themes and plugins and a strong blogging system. That flexibility needs care: hosting, updates, security and plugin choices. A well-built WordPress site is excellent, a neglected one is slow and fragile.

How to choose

  1. What is the main job: sell products, explain a business, or publish lots of content?
  2. Who will edit it day to day, and how technical are they?
  3. How fast must it be, on phones, on average networks?
  4. What will you need a year from now: more products, a bigger blog, memberships?
  5. Who will look after hosting, updates and security?
